The objectives of this research were to study variance components and heritabilities (h2) of several peach traits, evaluate genetic and phenotypic correlations among traists, predict correlated response to selection and detemine parental breeding values. Seedings of one hundred-eight crosses among 42 peach cultivars and selections were were evvaluated for sevealplant and fruit characteristics in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The data were analyzed bu using a mixed linear model, with years treated as fixed and additive genotypes as random factors. The predicted selection response indicates that for most traits genetic advance is possible. Most genetic correlations within both groups of traits were equal to or greater than 0.30. The phenotupic correlations were, in general, much lower than the corresponding geneticc correlations. For many cobinations of traits genetic correlations were very strong and indicate that in a multiple trait selection program, correlated response will play an important role in dictating genetic advance. For plant traits, direct selection for flower density would result in a correlated response greater than direc response for flowers per node and % VGN (vegetaive + blind nodes). For fruit traits, percent soluble solids and TA would be the trais most affected by direct selection for ripening or FDP. The predicted parental BVs indicate a high range in genetic values for most traits under study. |
